Wonderful Mother of Mine...A Mother's Day Celebration Sale!

I am off to Virginia to spend the weekend with my mom, she is doing better, but still a long way to go. I am just thankful she is still here and remembers me. Cherish every moment with your both of parents, they are God's greatest gift to us!

Oh, where have I been??.. Alzheimer's Dementia..Awful Diseases!!

Sorry I haven't posted in a while! I am still trying very hard to get my mother settled in and it's been a very hard time trying to do so! She is doing okay, but having a lot of issues with medications and trying so hard to adjust to living in "assisted living". My mother has always been such a trooper and a fabulous woman, not to mention the best mom and it just breaks my heart to see her this way. I have been visiting her every weekend and watching her go downhill and it's so hard to see someone, especially your mother, just have everything taken away and even remember if she talked with me on that day! Things with Mimi's Rose have sort of taken a back seat and I apologize for this, but as I am sure everyone will agree...first things first.

I want to share a few things with all of you and hopefully make everyone aware of how important it is to ensure you have POA (Power of Attorney) if your father has passed or your mother! You are NOT able to do anything without this, thanks to the stinky HIPA laws, because you don't even have any rights to help them if you don't! Imagine that, your mother gave birth to you and you don't have any rights, unless you have the so many necessary papers to say you are even their child!! How can that be? I had to do many things to ensure my mother is well taken care, happy and provided for during the rest of her life. So talk with your parent(s), watch them and make sure you see the signs of Alzheimer's or Dementia, don't ignore them and simply think they are just having a "senior moment" as many of us refer to them as! You can read all about Alzheimer's or Dementia and the symptoms here and also on the web, they have a wealth of great information available including what the symptoms of these awful diseases are and no, they are just not "senile", it's truly much worst than that! Also, don't ever think it can't or won't affect you or your family, or your mom, dad or anyone close to you, because it does! Maybe it's just something we don't want to think about and I didn't, but it happens, so plan and prepare for everything with respect to Alzheimer's and Dementia. There are many many organizations who will help you cope with watching your parents slip away and believe me, it's one of the hardiest things I have ever had to deal with in my life.

If your parent don't have long term health insurance, now is the time to really look at this because the cost of assisted living is astronomical, not to mention the cost of the medications they will need. Medicare does not pay for assisted living in the private sector, so don't count on that and quite honestly, you wouldn't want Medicare to help pay for this, because it's not assisted living, but a nursing home, which is run by the state and we all know what that can mean. So plan now for yourself and everyone you care about and love, because trying to deal with these terrible diseases and then coping with everything else is very stressful. Long term care is a fabulous option, though my mother didn't have it, she was a very smart lady and made sure she had enough money for any emergency, for which I am very thankful. The cost for this type of monthly care is huge, again, not to mention the cost of medications and everything else you have to do to make sure your parents are safe and hopefully happy, in their new surroundings!

The place my mom is at is absolutely wonderful! She has a cat named "Gus" and has had him for nine years, which I think he has been her saving grace! I visited many assisted living facilities and when I walked into this one, (which is not a large one), there sat "Lilly"! She is the resident welsh corgy dog and she greeted me with such warm eyes and a friendly wagging tail. Well that set the tone for me! I, of course, walked in, "unannounced", which is what they recommend you do, so you can actually see what is happening and observe the sites, sounds and smell of the facility. They were very kind, helpful and gave me a tour of their facility mom now calls "home". They also have what's called a "memory care" side, which thank goodness mom doesn't have to reside on this part of the facility. They gave me a tour of the rooms with private baths, with shared baths and even have room where two people can share if they like! It has a fabulous dining room, a very large outdoor fenced in backyard where they can even have a garden if they so choose. A lovely front porch area with wicker furniture and they can even have their own bird feeders at their window! Well, one of the most important factors to me was that mom be able to keep Gus, her cat! We chatted about everything and then I asked, "can Mom have her cat here"! They said "YES"!! I was just so relieved because I was so concerned I would not be able to find this level of quality care I wanted mom to have and also have her cat too! I was shocked, but then Lilly (the resident dog) helped me make up my mind. So I left, revisited again and signed the necessary papers. This facility was kind enough to let me sign all these papers without any POA or other necessary papers required by law, which was amazing to me, but I was so thankful they worked with me, as some of the other facilities wouldn't even talk with me. This facility has just 45 rooms, is owned by a fabulous corporation which does really seem to care about all of their residents and I think it shows!! You can expect to spend at LEAST $3500 A MONTH, just for living in an assisted living facility, if it costs any less, better check your state and found out about them, because they make many infractions against! I checked every facilities record even before I started visiting the ones which would fit mom and which I felt would appeal not only to me, but mom most of all!! So be sure to check each facilities records, they will list what types of violations, etc., they have been given, because if they are registered with the state, the state visits these facilities on a regular basis. Make sure you know everything there is to know about any of the ones you may be interested in, because appearances can be deceiving, even if they look great, it truly doesn't mean a thing if they have a number of violations. If they aren't registered with the state you reside in, don't even consider this type of facility, because then they don't have to follow the state guidelines!

I finally have gotten all the papers I need to make sure mom is well taken care and most of all happy for the remainder of her life and it's truly a relief to know I can now take care of my mom, giving back to her for what she gave me during my life and for that I am so thankful.

I just wanted to get some things off my chest, thanks for taking the time to let me share this experience with you and please ensure you help your parents take care of things, because without them we wouldn't be here today!

Tis The Season to be...??

Things have been a whirl wind for the past three weeks, my mother is not doing well and it's with a very heavy heart I tell you, she will be going into assisted living on Tuesday. I have been traveling back and forth to Virginia, with my last stay being over a week. It's so hard to have to make arrangements for something you just don't believe is happening to you or your mom and truly never thought would.

My family and friends will be spending Christmas Day with my mom in her "new home", hoping she will settle in and feel it's a bit like home. We are moving her things tomorrow and she will come on Tuesday, I would like to have everything in place and ready for her. She will be able to have her wonderful companion, Gus, her cat, who has been a true friend for the past 9-1/2 years, so I am hoping he will help her be more comfortable in her new surroundings. He will be there waiting for her at the door! This is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do in my life, but am thankful she is still here and can enjoy Christmas with us, once again and hope she will have many more holidays with us.

Remember what Christmas is all about. It's about family, friends, sharing, caring and loving each other every day, not just at Christmas time, but all year long!

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF
PLASTER AND STONE.

I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY
WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO
IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,
A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,
NOT EVEN A TREE.

NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,
JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,

It's Almost Show Time!

I can't believe it's show time again, where has the year gone! It seems each year flies by faster than the last one! I will be at the Virginia Beach Christmas Market November 27, 28 and 29 and right at the front door, booths 451/452.5! Off to the Craftsman's Classic Spring Show ~ Garden Tip #6

This is the last post I will be doing for a few days, I am off to the "Craftsman's Classic Spring Show" in Greensboro, North Carolina. The show dates are April 3rd - 5th and I am hoping it will be a great show! The show in Richmond was somewhat slow, but given the economy it was to be expected. I am just hoping this will be a better one! The promoters of this show are wonderful, do advertising on TV, Radio, in the newspapers and of course, via email. So everyone please wish me luck!

Okay, here is Garden Tip #6 and it's about Lawn Preparation ~ another this includes another item you would never think to use for this particular function, but besides good for aching and soaking, plus a laxative (grandma used to use this), read on to find out what it is.

If you want a happy and healthy lawn, you have to give it some relief from pollution, (this is where the surprise ingredient) comes into play! So do this ~ apply lime, the pelletized type if possible, gypsum and here's the surprise ~ Epsom Salts, just as early the spring as possible. Use a hand-held broadcast type spreader. But remember this please ~ do not, however apply any lawn preparation mixture more than two (2) weeks before fertilizing your lawn!

Here is what you will need and again, remember it will do a 2500 SF lawn

50 lb. bag of lime (again pellitized if available, it's much easier to use than the other)

50 lbs. gypsum

2 lbs. Epsom Salts (you should be able to find this at your local drug store ~ ha, this has many other uses for the garden I will be talking about as the posts continue.

Your lawn will love you and you will love how your lawn looks if you follow the tips I have been posting daily! Put your home's best foot forward with a shiny, squeaky clean, green lawn which is what you will have using these mixtures and tonics I am posting. I am going to take a picture of my lawn, with a before and after shot and will post it in the next couple of weeks, after the effects of using these tonics and mixtures work their magic!

I will post about the Craftsman's Classic Spring Show in Greensboro when I return, in the meantime, hope each of you have a wonderful "green, natural and healthy" week!

Mimi's Rose Sale & Garden Tip #5 Pre-Emerge Weed Control for your Lawn

Now is the time to get rid of all those weeds in your yard, like crabgrass and any other unsitely weed, even though it's green, get rid of them using this Tonic! Do this as soon as possible in the spring, and apply any pre-emerge weed control Before 12 Noon and water with your 20 gal. hose-end sprayer. Remember this tonic recipe will cover a 2500 sf lawn. The following tonic will "Shine Up" your Landscape!

Please remember to use the 20 gal. hose-end sprayer you marked with the word "Warning" on it in red with nail polish and use this sprayer for insect or weed control only! If you didn't do this, then read this post and follow the directions please!

Here's the Pre-Emerge Weed Control Tonic ~ again you aren't going to believe how simple it is and what's in it ~ so here's the "recipe". This will really "Zing" the weeds!

Pre-Emerge Weed Control Tonic for Your Lawn:
1 Cup liquid dish soap or children's shampoo (this removes the seed shell protection from the weeds)
1 Cup of Hydrogen Perioxide
2 tbsp. Instant Tea
You can also add your favorite liquid pre-emerge control to this tonic.

If you prefer to use "dry" pre-emerge controls, you can add 1 Cup of "Dry Laundry" detergent to the purchased "dry" pre-emerge controls. This will also remove "seed shell" protection from the unsitely weeds in your lawn!

Again, apply this with the 20 gal. hose-end sprayer, marked with the word "Warning"before 12 Noon.

Anything Pink Sale at Mimi's Rose ~ Insect Prevention for your Lawn

Here's the next in a series of posts on lawn care, gardening and just general things you can do in these areas to ensure everything is pest free and beautiful.

Today's post is about how to control bugs in your lawn. Yes, every lawn has bugs. To debug and disease-proof your lawn there are two tonics to help you control insects. So read on about how to get rid of them, again using things which are readily available in your home, or easily purchased at the grocery store!

You must do this before anything else ~ read and heed this please:
Take a 20 gal. hose-end sprayer and pain the word "Warning" in red on the jar with red nail polish. Then add an orange golf ball (it's like an agitator and use this sprayer only to apply the pest or insect control at their recommended rate, the tonic recipe is below!

To debug and disease- proof your lawn, before you apply any chemical insect control, mix this tonic in your 20 gal. hose-end sprayer. Then followup within one hour, with an application of Dursban or Diazinon at the recommend rate.

1 cup of Fels Naptha Soap Solution*
1 cup chewing tobacco juice**
1 cup antiseptic mouthwash

*How to make the Fels Naptha Soap Solution:
Shave 1" of the Fels Naptha Bar Soap into an old nylon stocking and place into a gallon of boiling hot water, along with 4 oz. of children's shampoo or liquid dish detergent, remember don't use an antibacterial dish detergent, use the inexpensive kind. You can save what you don't use, because there are many more mixtures or tonics you can use this for and will find in other posts later. I remember my grandmother always having and using this soap! http://www.soapsgonebuy.com/category_s/8.htm This soap is great for many things, even Poison Ivy Control. This link tells you about Fels Naptha and the many uses it has!

Before you apply any chemical insect control, mix the "Insect Control Tonic" recipe below in your 20 gal. hose-end sprayer and apply after 7 PM.

**How to make the Insect Control Tonic:
1 cup liquid dish soap
1/2 chewing tobaco juice
2 tbsp. Witch Hazel
4. tbsp. Instant Tea

IMPORTANT***** In recent years soap manufacturers have added degreasers and antibacterial ingredients to their products. These are VERY harmful to your plants and most likely will burn or kill them. When a home gardening technique calls for liquid dish soap be very careful that you use only Ivory or Fels Naptha Solution. You can also use the original liquid lemon type detergent which has no additives, just be careful that it does not contain a degreaser or is antibacterial.

Here are some great lawn care tips, things you might never think of:
1. Wear golf shoes when working in your yard or garden
2. Water before 2 PM, between 5 AM and 8 AM is best
3. Pick all the grass clippings and use as mulch for your garden
4. Apply your weed controls between 1 PM and 3 PM on a bright, sunny and non-windy day
5. Apply any disease controls after 7 PM
6. Mow after 7PM for both you and your lawn's comfort and health
7. Make sure you mow only with a very sharp blade (might want to buy a few extra blades)
8. Make sure to hose down your lawnmower after you are done

Okay, now for some great fertilizing, snack and all-season tonic recipes!

In the spring, use this fertilizer recipe remembering this will do a 2500 sf. lawn

Fertilizing:
3 lbs. of Epsom Salts per 2500 square ft bag
50 lbs. of your favorite dry lawn food ( apply this at half of the recommended rate)
use a hand held spreader on the medium setting.

The Snack Tonic:
It's an instant snack which will get your lawn up and growing in the spring and the fall, which is when you need aggressive roost action and thatch breakdown. Mix the following ingredients in a 20 gal. hose end sprayer and apply after your first application of dry lawn food in spring and after your last application in the fall.
1 Can Beer (doesn't matter what kind)
1 cup liquid dish soap or baby shampoo
then fill the balance 20 gal. hose end sprayer with ammonia

The All-Season Tonic:
After applying your "Snack Tonic", every 3 weeks, early in the morning, within two days of mowing your lawn, feed everthing in your garden with this "All Season Tonic", again mixed in your 20 gal hose-end sprayer:
1 Can Beer
1 cup Ammonia
1/2 cup liquid dish soap
1/2 cup Liquid Lawn Food
1/2 cup of molasses or corn syrup (yes, you are reading this correctly)

Make sure to clean your sprayer really well, the molasses or corn syrup may clog up your nozzle on the sprayer, so take extra care to clean properly after each use.

Mimi's Rose Gardening Tip #2 ~ Natural Insect Control

Okay, here's the best recipe for insect control for all of your flowers, including those beautiful roses we talked about yesterday.

I can guarantee you the bugs won't be happy with this mixture! Add it to a quart of water and spray directly onto the foliage:

5 Drops of Liquid Dish Detergent (not dishwashing detergent please)

5 drops of chewing tobacco juice (recipe below) ~ see there are good uses for tobacco!

2 drops of antiseptic mouthwash (Listerine - brown or original )

1/2 tsp of Thuricide Bacillus Thuringiensis, also called "BT" ~ this is a bonide
Organic spore which attacks insect larvae. Great for organic growers. Works for soil grown plants, so it's family and environmentally safe!

Here is the recipe you will need for the "Chewing Tobacco Juice":

To make this "juice" place 3 fingers of chewing tobacco in an old nylon stocking and stock in a gallon of hot water until the mixture is dark brown.

Note: You should use a separate 20 gallon hose-end sprayer and put the word "warning" on the jar with red marker or nail polish, then put an orange golf ball in there, this will work as an agitator and use this sprayer for applying pest controls only, don't use it for any other applications at all, only for "Insect Control" for any applications, i.e., lawn, flowers, gardens, etc.

You should be able to find Thuricide Bacillus Thuringiensis, also called "BT" at your local Home Garden Center, if not you can order it as I did from this website, Master Gardening, it comes in a concentrate form. As with any and all herbicides, the smaller the size the better, and store in a safe location away from your kids and any other inquisitive members of your family.

What's the tip for the day on Saturday?? Weed Control for your lawn! The ingredients will surprise you and cost a fraction of what the "weed & feed" bagged items from your local Home and Garden Center do! You will be amazed what the ingredients are to control weeds in your lawn!

I have this wonderful book, which I have been looking for for months and finally found it! It has great gardening tips, which I am going to start sharing with you, especially since many of us will be planting gardens this year!

This post will be about Roses, all colors and kinds! So here is some great information on how to have the most beautiful and healthy roses without tons of work! I love them, but don't want to be a slave to them!

The secret to beautiful roses during the growing season ~ keep your roses clean, well trimmed and fed regularly. When purchasing roses look for healthy rose bushes, if they are packaged, make sure the buds are not dried out, the sprouts aren't long and yellow, and lastly the top wood isn't black or brown!

When you select a location for your roses, it should be a sunny location. The soil should be light, crumbly and rich with leaves, peat moss, cow manure and other organic matter.

If your soil is clay or hard, add 3-4 handful of gypsum to the sides and bottom of the hole. Also add 2 Cups of Epsom Salts sprinkled dry on the soil each spring. In the bottom of each hole, add a handful of Epsom Salts and bone meal whenever you plant a rose!

Plant your roses per the instructions which come with them, water them well! Then use this "Special Start Up Meal". You will be surprised what the ingredients are and many of them are already in your home. I try to use natural items when gardening, and resort only to chemicals when I have to!

1 tsp. Whiskey

1 tbsp. Liquid Dish Soap

1 tbsp. Hydrogen Peroxide

1 tsp Vitamin B-1

add this to 1/2 gallon of warm tea water

Feeding is very important and should be fed every 3 weeks because they work so hard to continuously bloom and produce large thick stems to produce the large abundant blooms you will have, if you follow these procedures! After you have fed the "Start Up Meal", three weeks later, feed this "meal"

15-30-15 Liquid Fertilizer mixed in a solution of weak instant tea

1 ounce of Liquid Dish Soap to each gallon of water

The third "meal" consists of these ingredients and are added to a gallon of Warm Water:

1\2 ounce of Liquid Fish Fertilizer

2 tbsp. instant tea

1 tsp. saltpeper

1 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. iron

1 oz. dry red wine

Each rose gets a Quart.

If you follow these instructions, you are sure to have the most beautiful roses on the block!

It's finally here ~ I have been doing a lot of research on organizations, websites and government websites where you can find out all kinds of information on ways to "Support Our Troops"!

I found this wonderful poem which was written by Ms. Francine Pucillo and wanted to share it with you! Please visit her website, she has written some beautiful poems!!

Prayers now rise to heaven

I have been in contact with my niece Megan, and was hoping to have a picture to post for this event, but unfortunately they are not allowed to take pictures ~ so I will try to describe this very special young lady to everyone ~ she is about 5"3", dark brown hair and big beautiful brown eyes with a slender build and a big heart! I remember when she was little, she would look at you with those "big brown eyes" and my heart would melt. Then other times when she may have done something she was not supposed to and knew it, she would "cut" those big brown eyes at you, knowing she was in "trouble", but she was and will always be my "other daughter" and I am hoping each of you will find it in your heart to let her know how much we all appreciate what she and her fellow troops are sacrificing for us.

I think the poem states exactly how I feel and I am hoping each of you feel the same! Doesn't matter if you agree or disagree with the war, it's about supporting each and every Soldier, Marine, Navy or Air Force personnel who truly give of their lives on a daily basis, so we can enjoy freedom and safety in the United States of America! My hat is off to the Troops and to each of you, and for that I say "Thank You"!

I have also found out one of the most requested items is a AT&T International Phone Card ~ make sure they are for calls from the Middle East to the United States of America.

I know at times, I don't hear back from her for days, and it's because of the email system they have! At first, I must tell you, I was worried because I didn't hear from her and of course, thought the worst. But she is doing good, trying to adjust to being in a desert or "Sand Box" as it is referred to by others.

I am sending her a gorgeous chenille quilt, some Puffs Tissues with Lotion, candy, toiletry items and a few other things (which I won't mention, because I am not sure if she will be able to read the post or not), so I want some of the items to be a surprise! I have found some valuable information on shipping from USPS:

Before you send a letter or package to one of our troops overseas, make sure you’re aware of certain restrictions. Every country has customs regulations regarding incoming mail. Although there are specific restrictions for each five-digit Military Post Office ZIP Code™ (APO/FPO), generally, the following are prohibited in the region of Operation Iraqi Freedom:
Obscene articles (prints, paintings, cards, films, videotapes, etc).
Any matter depicting nude or seminude persons, pornographic or sexual items, or nonauthorized political materials.
Bulk quantities of religious materials contrary to the Islamic faith. Items for the personal use of the addressee are permissible.
Pork or pork by-products.
For packages, print on one side only with the recipient’s address in the lower right portion.

Use the service member’s full name. The Department of Defense cancelled the Any Service Member program so mail must be addressed to someone specific.
Include the unit and APO/FPO (Air/Army Post Office or Fleet Post Office) address with the nine-digit ZIP Code™ (if one is assigned). Click-N-Ship® customers should be advised that the Postal Service and the Military will continue to add and update valid APO/FPO addresses for your online labels.
Include a return address.
For packages, print on one side only with the recipient’s address in the lower right portion or print a postage-paid label online with Click-N-Ship®. (Please note that ZIP Codes 093XX and 964XX are currently unavailable for electronic labels. We apologize for the inconvenience.)

Tips on Packaging from USPS Website:

There are certain factors to consider when sending packages to our troops overseas. To make sure package contents arrive in good shape, take these into consideration.

Extreme Temperatures: Desert temperatures typically exceed 100 degrees.

The Box: Select a strong box with room for cushioning. On recycled boxes, cover all previous labels and markings with a heavy black marker or adhesive labels.

Cushioning: Cushion contents with Styrofoam or bubble wrap to keep items from shifting. We recommend fragile items be double boxed, with cushioning inside and between the boxes to absorb shock.

Batteries: Battery powered items will sometimes get turned on during shipment. Remove and wrap the batteries separately.

Sealing: Tape the opening of the box and reinforce all seams with 2 inch wide tape. Use clear or brown packaging tape, reinforced packing tape or paper tape. Do not use cord, string or twine.

Include a card describing the contents: Improperly wrapped packages can fall apart during shipment. Including a card inside, listing the sender’s and recipient’s addresses plus a description of the contents, helps in collecting the items. Here is a picture of the box you can get from the Post Office, it will save you on shipping, it's approximately $2.00 less expensive than the regular flat rate large box and also has a Logo on it which says "Support American Troops"! Support Our Troops Blog Day Event ~ March 21, 2009 ~ Please Join Me!

I haven't posted in a while, sorry, I have been under the weather and received a telephone call I wasn't expecting...

I have some news I want to share with everyone ~ my niece, who is 19 left for Iraq last Thursday and will be gone for approximately 16 months! I was upset, but proud! She joined the US Army when she was 17, yes ~ 17! She did her basic training at Fort Leonardwood, in Missouri, did very well and then was transferred to Washington State where she stayed until last Thursday. She trained as a medic and will be close to all of the terrible things happening in Iraq! Given the circumstances they weren't supposed to be sending any more troops to Iraq with the new administration in place, I was both very saddened, upset and worried about her being stationed in Iraq! I guess you could say it's better than Afghanistan, but who knows, with her tour of duty just beginning, she may up there along with the rest of her company. They sent another 16,000 troops over there! So anyway this is my thought and want I would like to do!

I want to host a blog event (certainly not a party) ~ but an event to Support Our Troops! I have been thinking about what to do and this is what I am going to plan:

I am going to post my niece's name, rank and APO mailing address here on the blog and would like to invite any blogger who would like to support our troops to participate, to please email me with their link and I will post it on my blog, with a link back to your blog. Please just drop a card in the mail, an email or possibly even a small package with some of the items from below! A card saying "thank you" would also be wonderful.

There are many wonderful creative people out there with beautiful blogs with hearts to match, and I think it would truly lift these "kids" spirits, given the location, living conditions not to mention what they will endure for quite a while!

It's a good way to keep up their morale while they are in this awful place and make them smile, given what they will see and have to do while they are stationed there.

If you send a box of "goodies and smiles", with a note asking Meggie to please share whatever items you send to the troops in her company, she will do that.

If you think about your "special tribute" post for your blog, maybe there is someone you know who is stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan or some other remote place in the world, who would love to receive a "care package" and post their information on your blog. An email would be great, as they love to receive news from the States with well wishes extended! When people read your story about your special person, friend or family member, they may choose to send a "care package" to them! I am hoping this will be like a "Pay it Forward" event honoring all of our troops!

Meggie has no idea I am doing this, I am sure she and her fellow soliders will be so happy to know that we, as Americans are just taking the time to send a note, an email or a box from home, especially being from someone they don't even know, it truly speaks volumes about each and every one of us. Oh, they also love pictures, especially when receiving a gift from someone they don't know, but are fighting for!!

So here is how it will work ~ and hopefully many of my wonderful followers and visitors will decide to participate! The "Support Our Troops" Blog Day Event will be March 21st.

All that is required of you is to have a "Support Our Troops" inspired event on your blog the day of this special tribute, a link back to my blog (Banner is above) and I will link to yours.

If you would like to post about this special tribute to "Our Troops" on your blog here is the flyer with the information, please feel free to copy this and post it on your blog, along with a link back to my blog! I received this email from Becky, her husband is a medic and also in Iraq. There is some information on shipping items to our troops which is very helpful ~ Thank you Becky!!

I left a comment on you blog. But I wanted you to know that you should mail all packages priority mail. It still takes about 2 weeks for them
to get it but you have less chance for the boxes to get lost if you send it priority.
Also the post office have boxes that you can pick up just for the troops. The boxes are free they are a flat rate box so you can fill it as heavy as you want.
It is $11.95 a box to send I think. But I do not know if they will go up in May when the stamps go up.
I hope this info helps.
And some thing to add to your list if you want. The sand is real bad there so they
need computer wipes and some good eye glass cleaner. They wear goggles alot because of the sand storms. Plus the sand is always bad.

Today is a special day, it's a day of love, romance and sharing your heart with all the people you surround yourself with in your life!

I want to tell you about a very special friend of mine, who made me smile and laugh! She was very special to me, you knew you could always count on her when you were down, when you needed a cup of sugar and just wanted to share a cup of coffee with in the morning, or anytime! Her name was Agnes, "Ag" as we all called her! She could make you laugh even when your heart was blue or aching. She was my best friend! You always know when you meet someone you just "click" with and this was true for me!

I moved to North Carolina in 1996, not by choosing, but because of my husband's job being eliminated due to "base closures" when Clinton was in office! Oh, I didn't want to move, we had built our life, our home and memories in Virginia, but we had no choice! My husband had 8 years left before he could retire, my daughter, who was 16 at the time, still had college to attend and we knew couldn't send her to college without relocating and getting the retirement he had worked so hard for! So we moved! It was dreadful, in a new place, where we knew no one, had to make friends again and try to fit in! While we settled, bought an old house built in 1890, just to keep me and my mind occupied while I renovated and redecorated!

Well, about a year later, I hear all this commotion across the street, boy, were they loud! I thought to myself, "oh, great" what kind of neighbors are we getting!! Well, it was Ag and Kenny, they were from New Jersey and had rented the house from the previous couple who had renovated it and moved to another part of the city! Little did I know at the time, she would be one of my best friends! She was Italian, talked with a "Jersey" accent and said what she had to say! They were wonderful neighbors, we became very good friends, traveled, antiqued, dined and even had a "luau" party! They had bought property and Kenny was going to build a house on the land they had purchased!

Ag and I had so much fun looking for antique pieces to use in their new house! One day, we went antiquing and stopped at this little place, we found a gorgeous oak fireplace surround and an antique white iron bed! Well, actually I found the bed, and she oohed and aahed, asked me "Deb, you want this bed" (I have four bedrooms upstairs, anyway, I said "no, I don't", so she got it. It went into her new house in Bath! Every time I saw that bed, I drooled, but it was perfect for them! We always joked about it, because I told her more than once, I could kick myself for not getting, and she would say, "you had your chance, it's mine now!". We had so many wonderful times and I truly miss her! You see, she died on her birthday of cancer, after loosing her wonderful husband and friend, to pancreatic cancer, only five months before, not even suspecting she had cancer!

So, I dedicate this heart to my friend Ag, and wanted you to know the story behind this heart!

I was on eBay looking for beautiful crocheted doilies and roses. I emailed one of the sellers to ask a question about her beautiful work. Add a bit of info about me and she emailed back, told me she had a sister who lived where I do, mentioned their names and I also most fell over, it was Ag's sister! What fate it was, she is now my friend, though lives in another state, and crochets the most beautiful things, you can find her on etsy!

Anyway, it's been almost three years since my dear sweet friend traveled to heaven to be with her husband and best friend, Kenny. Her sister, Mary Ann, made this heart for me, so I am passing it on to someone who will cherish it and understand the true meaning of love, remembering to always treasure your family, friends and life! I hope you will treasure this heart as a gift from me to you!!

Etsy is having a Thread Artists "Team Artistic" Color Challenge and I just wanted everyone to see the beautiful work Mary Ann, a wonderful friend of mine, does! Her work is absolutely beautiful. I get a lot of my crocheted items from Mary Ann. She honestly, I think, can crochet anything. It's truly becoming a lost art!

I remember when I was a kid and my grandmother would sit and crochet in the evening while we were watching "Gunsmoke", on Saturday night, she used to create the most beautiful things! They can't make a machine to recreate beautiful doilies like this one! My grandma tried to teach me, but at the time I wasn't interested in learning, sure wish I would have, but then I guess I wouldn't have met Mary Ann. (There is a very long story behind on how we met and it truly is something very special!! I believe to this day, God had in his plan!)

This is a picture of my kitchen we renovated in our home which was built in 1890. We took the cupboard doors off above the sink and added a cornice to create a little display area for some of my favorite things! I redid all of the cabinets myself (boy, will I ever do it again, NO!) Because the cupboards were in such great condition I did a paint technique on them to give them that old world feel. Below the sink, we took out the board and added tiles to create the effect of the old farm sinks you spend a fortune on! You have to come up with creative ways when you are renovating an old house! The wallpaper has monkeys swinging on vines and they really make me smile when I get up to have my morning cup of coffee! On the wall opposite this area, I had a great lady come in and do a trompe loile (oops, not sure I spelled this right, did a spell check but it didn't come up) of the monkeys swinging on the vines with their little vests on to match the wallpaper! My granddaughter just loves it and so do we!

This Friday is a busy one! There is Friday Flea Market, My Blog Giveaway ends today, and the Bloggy Giveaways Carnival also ends today. The Wonderful World of Chenille!

You can tell the difference between an "all cotton" chenille bedspread and one which was made during the era of "polyester". There will be a distinct sheen to the spread itself and it will also have the "pill" effect and be rough to the touch! Though there may be some which are pretty, they are not considered a "collectible" especially if you are looking for true "Vintage Chenille"!

My collection consists of approximately 225 spreads. I started collecting them about 7 years ago! It became an obsession! When my husband and I travel, we "treasure hunt" everywhere we can. Now my hubby even looks for them when he goes somewhere without me! So he has become addicted too! He went several years ago to see his mom, in Iowa, flew by plane and when he was home, he went to all the antique malls there, called and said he had found 5! Whew hoo, was I excited! There was a problem though, how to get them home, since he flew! While the innovative person he is, decided he would ship them back! I was so excited and when the box arrived ~ before he did ~ there were some wonderful vintage chenille bedspreads in this box! Wedding cake, rosebud, and even a Hoffman Daisy Pink Spread, not to mention that "Rosebud" by Morgan Jones! The most well known manufacturers, were Cabin Craft, Hoffman, RetRac (which by the way, spelled backwards, turn it around, It's Carter), and of course Morgan Jones, who made the infamous "Rosebud" we all love!

Now, mind you, I have many which I could never bare to cut, these are a true work of art! I truly feel they deserve to be preserved and I will pass them onto my granddaughter, Lauren, who is the "Rose" in Mimi's Rose! With that being said, unfortunately, there are many vintage chenille bedspreads which have been used and used, lovinly of course, these are the ones I prefer to use when I create my boutique clothing and other wonderful items! The colors are still very vibrant and the designs, textiles and overall appearance of these spreads continue to amaze me. I often wonder how do they still look the way they do, after some of them being almost 70 years old! I sure hope I look this good when the clock strikes 70!

If you visit the "home page" of my website, you will see just a sampling of the spreads Ihave or have had in the past! I also have a Hoffman Pink Daisy and a gorgeous Cameo Rose Spread on my website for sale at the present time.

Here are just a few of my beloved collection! I truly love the "Wedding Cake" designs, but all of them are my favorites!

If I pictured them all, you would be here all day! Mind you, I am not boasting, this just tells you what an addiction I have for Vintage Chenille Bedspreads! Enjoy!

Can you believe the New Year is here already??? Where did last year go? I want to wish everyone a Very Happy and Prosperous New Year filled with many wishes from me to you!

I am excited about the New Year and all the good things which are going to happen at Mimi's Rose Chenille Boutique! I have started creating the Spring Collection of Boutique Clothing and will be adding some great new items for the Spring Line.

The "Shabby Chic Bunnies" pictured above will be on the website in a couple of weeks, these are great for Easter, or just for shabby chic decorating. They will come in two sizes, large and small. I will be doing three shows in the Spring, not sure of the exact dates yet, but two of them are in April (before Easter) and then one in March, so I am busy trying to get everything ready for the shows and the website. I am looking forward to creating the Spring Collection of my Boutique Clothing line. It's so much fun to make everything with the wonderful new Spring Fabrics with roses and other pretty motifs. I just wanted to take a quick moment to say "Merry Christmas" to each and everyone of you! I hope all of your wishes for this Holiday Season are granted and each of you are safe, warm and enjoying the holidays with your families. I have been very busy the past couple of days baking Apple Pecan Bread and the most scrumptious Pumpkin Bread with Cream Cheese Frosting! I usually give baked goods as gifts to my neighbors and then make a few extra for family and close friends.

This item is this a rare find and I was truly tickled (not pink though) when I saw this on my travels this past weekend while in Williamsburg, VA! TRULY A BLACK FRIDAY!!!

I am so excited, today was the first day of the show in Virginia Beach and it was above and beyond my expectations! The doors opened at 10 and people were waiting to get in! I saw so many of my old loyal customers along with their beautiful little girls! Some of these precious little girls have been getting their chenille outfits, special Christmas outfits and jackets from me since they were 2 and now some of them are 5 and 6! Each year, they come in, give me a hug and usually bring me a little something, but the best gift I receive is the hugs and even "sugar" they share with me and now tell me what they want and try things on and say "Mimi, do you like this"? This is the reason why I do the shows, I have become a very special part of these precious little girls! Their moms bring me pictures of them in their outfits and I am so honored because their moms let me share in the memories of their lives! To all of those special customers, especially the moms and their little girls, I want to say "thank you" for allowing me to be a part of your special little girls lives! It is truly a joy for me to know I have made each little girl happy

Off to the Shows!

The trailer is packed and I mean to the hilt and it's a 24 foot one at that! I didn't realize I had so many things! I always worry about not having enough merchandise to take to the shows, but I am well stocked! At least that's what my husband said! We will be gone until December 8th, doing a show in Virginia Beach at the Virginia Beach Convention Center and then The Bizarre Bizaar in Richmond, Virginia! It's been a very long day, but I just wanted to take a minute to wish everyone a joyous and thankful "Thanksgiving". This is the time of the year we all reflect on what happens or has happened during this past year and years before.

Remember to take time to smell the roses, give your little ones a hug and be thankful for each and everyday.

Crossing Rainbow Bridge ~ Old Friends, New Friends!

This little fella is the newest addition to our family! Meet "Cody", he is the cutest little black/tan cocker spaniel and he certainly a "little dog, with a big attitude'! He has become my husband's buddy and they go everywhere together, along with my granddaughter, Lauren, when she is here!

We had a wonderful Chesapeake Bay Retriever for 15 years and she crossed the "Rainbow Bridge" on September 19th. She was a very special dog and a part of our family. She used to go to the race track with my husband, where everyone knew her and they all loved her. The kids would feed her hot dogs, much to my husband dismay, because he didn't like her eating "people food". She was the most loyal dog and we miss her!

Here is a beautiful poem about Rainbow Bridge:

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

Flea Market Friday ~ Celebrate the Holidays with a Great Butter Cookie Recipe!

I am just about done with everything for the shows! YEAH, it's been quite hectic and honestly I didn't have time to think about "special cookie recipes" for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Every year after the shows, my daughter, granddaughter and I get together and make these wonderful cookies. This is an old recipe which I have used for about 35 years and you don't find it in the newer cookbooks, so I thought I would share it with everyone! Our cookie baking and fudge event has become a tradition in our house. I have had to rewrite it many times, because it just fades as the years go by, but the tradition will not fade, because my daughter also does it with my "little rose" and hopefully she will carrying on the tradition when she gets older! We all look forward to doing this, sometimes even the teenage girls from next door and across the street come and join in the fun! We also do ole fashioned popcorn balls! This is the one my husband gets involved in, because he loves them and they are too hot for us to make the balls, so it's his yearly job!

I would love to share the "Butter Cookie" Recipe with you! So here goes: (Looks like it's time to rewrite again, the paper is tattered and worn!!

1 cup butter
3/4 cup of sugar
1 egg (beaten)
1 teaspoon of Pure Vanilla
2-3/4 cups of white flour (not self rising)
1/4 teaspoon of salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Work butter until soft, add sugar and beat until soft/creamy
add vanilla, stir to mix
add egg, stir until egg is blended well
add flour, 1 cup at a time, blend well
shape into ball, refrigerate for about 30-45 minutes
Roll dough out, a little thicker than piecrust (I do mine a bit thick) cut with your favorite cookie cutters.

Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes (this will depend on your oven), but we like our cookies soft, so if you like them a bit crisper, than bake 12-15 minutes. Remove from cookie sheet and frost with your favorite frosting (we use the buttercream frosting) and decorate to your hearts content!

I usually make 3/4 batches at one time, you can freeze the dough and just pull it out before the holidays or company arrives! The house will smell wonderful and your guests will love them!

I hope you enjoy these, they are the best tasting cookies! I received this recipe from a friend over 35 years ago and we have been doing them every year, watching our family grow and just making the most wonderful memories! Enjoy!!

Looking for the perfect little desktop storage, this is a must have! The colors are perfect, pinks, white and a creamy color on a soft cream colored background. I have to tell you, I have a daughter and she has been the biggest Godsend! She has been helping me prepare for the shows by doing the inventory, pricing and just generally keeping me organized and doing all the computer wizard things she does, that I don't know how to do!!!
She does all of this, while attending college, working full time job as an RN and completing her masters so she can become a Nurse Practioner! Yes, she is very intelligent and also pretty, plus not to mention the fact, she is my "Little Rose's" mom!

I honestly don't know where all the years have gone, but for every mom out there who has little ones, enjoy them, spend as much time as you can with them, give them all the support, praise and love you can give them, because they will reward you like my daughter has me! Children are Gods' Gift and certainly something to be treasured!

The Holidays are very special and a wonderful time to share with your most favorite friends and family, especially a daughter and granddaughter like mine! So make the most of every moment you can! Your children will reward you in ways you never thought possible!

This is a picture of my daughter on the left and my "Little Rose" on the right, she looks just like her mom! We spent a week in Williamsburg, VA year before last, they were both "acting up", so I locked them up for a bit! They are my pretty girls!

Oh No, less than a week before the Shows!

It's almost time to the hit the road for the shows! I can't believe they are just around the corner! Where did the time go??? Funny how you think you will have the time to do everything you need and then bam ~ before you know it, the time has gone by right before your eyes!! I am very excited about going though, setting up the booth is my most favorite part, I get to have a shabby chic Christmas booth and every morning when I go into the show, it just makes me smile!

We will be leaving a week from today, for the Virginia Beach Christmas Market" (here's the link :http://www.emgshows.com/ ) Tuesday, November 25th, setting up on Wednesday and then, can you believe it's Thanksgiving!! The show starts on Friday, the 28th, so it is definitely crunch time!

My Hubby's 1932 Ford Coupe

Thought you all like to see what my retired husband does for his hobby! We have been married almost 39 years (oops, I am almost telling my age) and he has built cars since he was 16! His wonderful father taught him everything he knows! So this was his latest venture! He retired almost 4 years ago, wow, where did the time go! Anyway, he worked on this car, day and night for over a year! We go to Rod Runs, car shows and just out for a cruise on a Saturday night! This is his passion, but again, he is now ready to move on! I honestly was hoping this would be his last one ~ but no ~ he's got the bug again, so he has put it on eBay ~ not sure he will get what he wants and certainly deserves as a price, but it has a reserve, so I am not worried!! Thank goodness!

I honestly can't remember at this point, how many he has done, but he loves it and so I also enjoy what he does. My granddaughter, Lauren, (my little rose) loves to go for a ride with him on Saturday mornings, they head out for their breakfast together every Saturday! It has become a ritual! It's a real pleasure to watch the two of them take off.

Busy Day in my studio!

It's been a busy, crazy day in my sewing room! I have gotten all the Grinch dresses ready for the shows. These are really cute, some have the "Grinch Stockings" and the word "Grinch" which I embroidered on them. So they are now ready to pack up and take to the first show, which is now just right around the corner! The twirl skirt sets are almost complete, I still have another six shirts to embroider, which I will do tomorrow.

I have completed my "teacup lights", and they turned out so pretty! I ordered some of the gorgeous Royal Doultan "Cameo Roses" pattern and a few other pretty ones from them, I will post pictures sometime in the next few days, after I have done all my other things first.

There will also be gorgeous vintage chenille Christmas Stockings, plus, of course, my Boutique Clothing line created from only the finest vintage chenille.

I must say at first, I was a bit concerned because of the economy, gas prices and the election, but things seem to be settling a bit! I checked gas prices in Virginia today and the lowest price I found, was a $1.85 a gallon! Can you believe that!! I honestly didn't think the price would ever fall below $2.00 a gallon!! I am hoping this will relieve some of the stress to everyone, especially with the holidays right around the corner. I am being very optimistic about the upcoming shows, and all the items for the website.

I sent out my first newsletter yesterday, using Constant Contact, I love this site, it was easy to do and their fees are very reasonable. If anyone wants info, just email me and I will be happy to give you all the information. I didn't realize I had so many email contacts, there were 691 to be exact! So doing the newsletter this way, was so much easier than the way I had done them in the past. I was able to add a coupon at the bottom, which they can print out and bring to the show, which I thought was wonderful!

Being a member of Shabby Lane Shops is so much fun! It's like a one big happy family. All of the members are truly wonderful and we all help and support each other without worrying about "the competition" between us, which to me, is absolutely wonderful! Shabby Chic at it's Finest! Fun Chenille Clothing

This is my first post, I am so excited to find the time! I am busy doing final touches for the upcoming Holiday Shows I attend. The first one is "The Virginia Beach Christmas Market", held at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. I have the same location as last year, which is right at the front door. The promoters, EMG Shows, Inc., are such wonderful hosts. Linda, Steve and Erin all do such a wonderful job! This is really a great show, you will find all kinds of great juried items. Show dates are November 28-30th! "Black Friday", as referred to in retail, yes, it starts the day after Thanksgiving and they swarm into the show! The second show, is "The Bizarre Bazaar, 33rd Christmas Market in Richmond, Virginia. The show starts Wednesday evening, December 3rd with a "Gala Preview Event" and all proceeds from tickets purchased go to the Virginia Massey Center ~ for cancer, so it's a great cause! The show officially opens on December 4th and concludes on Sunday, December 7th. This is my first Christmas show in Richmond, but it is anything like the Spring Show, it will be great.

Below are some pictures from the 2007 Virginia Beach Christmas Market. My booth was full. Setting up the booth display is my favorite part, other than seeing my customers I only see twice a year, so I have a great time!
